💍 How to Find Your Ring Size (Easy Guide by Ben Perkins Makes)

A simple, stress-free guide to help you get the perfect fit for your handmade ring.

Finding your ring size is one of the most common questions I’m asked and for good reason. A well-fitting ring should feel comfortable, secure, and effortless to wear.

This guide walks you through the most accurate ways to find your ring size, starting with the lowest-risk options first, followed by some reliable at-home methods if you need them.

This page is here to save you the guesswork and make sure your ring arrives fitting comfortably from day one.

✨ Why Getting the Right Ring Size Matters

A handmade ring, especially one with a personal story behind it, deserves the perfect fit.

Too tight = uncomfortable and bad for circulation.

Too loose = risky might slip off.

A well-sized ring means comfort, confidence, and something that feels like yours straight away.

⭐ The Best & Most Accurate Ways to Find Your Ring Size

1. Order a Ring Sizer (Best Overall Option - Lowest Risk)

If you want the simplest, most accurate, and lowest-risk option, ordering a ring sizer is my top recommendation.

You can order one online (for just a couple of pounds), and it allows you to measure your finger properly at home - no guesswork, no rushing, no leaving the house.

Just try on the various rings on the keyring and check the size written on the ring, I usually recommend going for the smallest you can fit on your finger without it being too tight to take off over your knuckle.

⚠️ If it’s gets stuck a drop of washing up liquid will slip it off, and then I’d recommend the size up from that!

Why this is the best option:

✅ Extremely accurate

🔁 Measure your finger multiple times

🏠 No need to visit a shop

♻️ Keep it for future use and future rings

💍 Ideal for custom or sentimental pieces

This is the option I’d choose myself if I didn’t already know my size, I’ve got a few of these ring sizers and they do a great job.

2. Visit a Local Jeweller (Professionally Accurate & Free)

If you’re happy to head out, visiting a local jeweller is another excellent option. Most jewellers are more than happy to size your finger quickly and accurately - usually for free.

This is ideal if you’re already out and about or want professional reassurance before ordering.

📏 How To Find Your Ring Size At Home (Still Accurate if Done Carefully)

If you can’t order a ring sizer or visit a jeweller, don’t worry - here are reliable home methods you can use.

3. Paper or Card Strip Method (Best DIY Option)

This is the most reliable at-home method if you don’t have a ring sizer.

How to do it:

  1. ✂️ Cut a thin strip of paper or card

  2. 🤲 Wrap it comfortably around the base of your finger

  3. ✏️ Mark where the ends meet

  4. 📐 Measure the length in millimetres

  5. 📊 Match it to a ring size chart

Tips:

  • Don’t pull it too tight

  • Measure more than once

  • Keep the paper flat and straight

  • Ensure to measure around the knuckle so the ring will be able to slide off

This method is simple, accessible, and accurate when done properly.

4. String or Dental Floss Method (Alternative DIY Option)

If you don’t have paper or card, string or dental floss works in the same way.

Wrap it around your finger, mark the overlap, measure the length, and compare it to a ring size chart.

Note: string can stretch, so keep it snug but not tight.

5. Measure an Existing Ring You Own

If you already have a ring that fits the same finger:

  1. Place it flat on a table

  2. Measure the inside diameter in millimetres

  3. Match it to a ring size chart

This can be good and accurate if the ring fits well and isn’t warped, but it’s worth getting a few readings. And if you’ve got callipers to measure up that will be much more accurate.

🌡 Important Things to Consider When Measuraing Your Ring Size

To get the most accurate result, keep these in mind:

Measure More Than Once

  • Your fingers naturally change size throughout the day. Measure two or three times for consistency.

Measure at Room Temperature

  • Cold fingers are smaller. Warm hands give a more accurate size.

Measure Later in the Day

  • Your fingers are usually slightly larger in the evening than in the morning.

Consider Your Knuckle Size

  • If your knuckle is significantly wider than the base of your finger, choose a size that slides over the knuckle comfortably without feeling loose once on.

🤔 What If You’re Between Two Sizes?

If you measure and land between two sizes, the best choice usually depends on comfort and how you’ll wear the ring.

  • If the ring is wide (6mm+), size up - wider bands feel tighter on the finger.

  • If you prefer a snug fit and won’t be wearing it in hot conditions, size down.

  • If your fingers swell with heat, exercise, or cold water, sizing up is often safer.

  • If the ring will be worn daily, comfort matters more than a tight fit.

If you’re still unsure, choosing the slightly larger size is generally the safer option.
